Our Story

Our story begins with Norma and Joseph Lohbrunner, who wanted to preserve their 35-acre parcel of land on Southern Vancouver Island for future generations. After Joseph's passing in 1968, Norma remained resolved to protect the land from encroaching development.

In 2007, Norma fulfilled her wish to safeguard the land by donating it to The Land Conservancy (TLC), with the condition that she could continue living there. The property was designated “The Joseph Lohbrunner Ecological Sanctuary Reserve”.

In the years after Norma’s passing in 2011, TLC faced financial challenges that jeopardized the future of the farm. That’s when FarmFolk CityFolk (FFCF) stepped in. In 2016, FFCF, Vancity, the Vancity Community Foundation, and the founding members of the farm raised $500,000 in donations and loans in three weeks to secure the 13 acres of agricultural land. An additional 25 acres were protected by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The farm became the founding member of the FFCF Foodlands Cooperative of BC and the Lohbrunner Community Farm Co-operative was born.

Today, the farm is well known in Langford for local and sustainable food production, environmental stewardship, and community events. Lohbrunner Community Farm Co-operative is a vibrant home to two certified organic market farms, amateur farmers, and a team of enthusiastic volunteers.

We’re proud to honor Norma Lohbrunner’s wishes by embracing a model of cooperative land stewardship, promoting biodiversity, local food production, and community engagement. We’re grateful to the founding members of the co-operative whose hard work and dedication helped to build the farm into the community resource it is today.
